Why do I see people using dots under their Instagram post?

You’ve probably seen posts on Instagram that have a series of dots, one on each line, after the text section. Why is that? Put simply, it’s to hide the hashtags. So, why hide the hashtags that are so valuable in increasing reach and engagement?

Most instagramers love the clean and pretty look of Instagram. When you add a bunch of hashtags at the end of your caption (potentially 30), it detracts from the beauty of the feed. Additionally, by forcing the hashtags down into the “read more” section, it improves readability.

Why all the dots in instagram

You can have the beauty of a clean feed AND the effectiveness of the hashtags when posting from your iPhone even though the app doesn’t allow for a hard return. Here’s how:

  1. Open your Notepad and type your caption there, then add the returns and one dot on each line, typically 3 to 5 to push the hashtags to the “read more” section.
  2. Here you can also then add all your hashtags (or you can add them later in Instagram if you want to see what the public posts number for that particular hashtag is).
  3. Select All and Copy
  4. Open your Instagram app on your phone and simply Paste into the caption area.

That’s it. You’ve done it!
